- He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. A mistake on his West Point papers made him “Ulysses S. Grant”, and the name stuck.
- He set a high-jump record on horseback at West Point that stood for about 25 years.
- He was a talented painter as a cadet, and some of his watercolours still survive.
- He was stopped by a Washington police officer for driving his horse and buggy too fast while he was president.
